Seth Godin’s funnel flip

I just wanted to direct attention over to Seth Godin’s free download, Flipping the Funnel. It’s a new e-book, PDF format. He says:
This new ebook (3 versions, 18 pages each, PDF format) explains how I believe some of the new Web 2.0 tools (flickr, del.icio.us, squidoo and others) combine with ideaviruses and the Purple Cow.
I [...]

A new book; a freelance gig

Again, it’s been a long while since I’ve posted here. Sorry. But there hasn’t been much worth saying.
Not that it’s of any interest to anyone but myself, I’m currently reading Arthur & George by Julian Barnes. I’m utterly engaged and captivated by it which I find a bit odd as it’s written in a very [...]

Trying to explain Dhalgren

I received an e-mail in reference to my post Strange things found in my reading list. They basically wanted to know what it was about Samuel R. Delany’s Dhalgren I liked. The best I was able to come up with, was this:
You know, over the years I’ve tried explaining the book and why I like [...]

So I decided to go into my Blogger profile and fill in a few of the interest fields - just to see what all that stuff was about. (I’ve had a blog on Blogger since 2001 but it’s only now that I’ve actually gone and done this.)
Anyway, it was interesting (to me) when I filled [...]

Choosing what to read

Again, I’m a little off the topic of Web and business writing, but this is sort of on the topic of marketing - the marketing of books. This is a confession of sorts. I’m owning up to how I choose what to read these days. And whining a little bit too.
This little rant was prompted [...]

Although I posted this about a week ago on The Burble, I decided to repost it here because it’s about writing. However, it’s not the usual kind of writing I talk about here. It goes like this:
I’ve just started reading Adaptations: From Short Story to Big Screen (see Amazon.com, Amazon.ca). It’s a big and fascinating [...]

I’ve been neglecting my blog lately. And when I haven’t, I’ve been a little off its supposed writing theme. It’s partly because I’ve been reading a lot (when not working to pay the bills.)
But for people who write, reading is part of writing. The only way to write well is to write a lot and [...]

I came across the blog Crime Fiction Dossier and found a posted titled Grabbing readers right from the start and felt compelled to post two of my favourite openings to novels. By the way, the idea of an opening that grabs a reader is applicable to all fiction.
Anyway, here are two of my favourites:
Chronicle [...]

There’s a guy. A writer. He goes by the name of Alexander McCall Smith. You can read about him here (the CBC Web site) - Automated Storyteller: The curse of the prolific author.
It appears I’m not the only person who has noticed this guy doesn’t just write. He writes a lot.
And I can’t keep up.  [...]

Wired had this item: Video Shills for Literary Stars.
The upside of this is that authors and publishers are using technology and making an effort at being a bit innovative in their marketing. (The industry has always struck me as being somewhat luddite so this is a good sign to me.)
On the other hand, though [...]
