Mish mash - is there time or not?
May 9th, 2007 by Bill
There is a Jim Cuddy song (Pull Me Through) where the lyrics go something like, “There are letters left unopened here, there never is the time; there are messages I should return …”
Well, I can certainly relate to that these days. There are emails I need to reply to and blog posts I should write … but there never is the time. Or is there?
The truth is, my kitchen and other home renovation projects are more or less complete. And work has stabilized somewhat. So those excuses are no longer valid. However, I love this house I’m in, the weather has turned spectacular, and I’d just rather sit around enjoying it all. So I start some posts, but they never seem to get completed.
It’s just one of those down phases. They come, they go.
I did, however, come across an interesting post on Seth’s blog concerning reading. The post is called Do business books work? and it’s really about reading - be it books or blogs. I’m with Seth on this one. How can anyone take your work seriously if you make no effort at keeping up on the trends, news, ideas etc. that concern your field, and which are largely discussed through books and blogs?
Some books are worthwhile; some are a waste of time. But you can’t know that if you don’t read. A large part of the work I have had over the years was due to the fact I had been keeping up on the Web, marketing, technology and business. I was not an expert, but I was at least familiar with what was happening and could discuss these things intelligently. If nothing else, it communicates to employers and clients that you’re on the ball and possibly the guy who can help them.
Honestly, to my mind, saying you don’t read, or you don’t have time to read, is tantamount to saying you’re an idiot with nothing to offer.
