Please don’t write

I learned this years ago when I was working in radio and writing pointless, waste of time ads. What to write – it’s a post on Seth Godin’s blog.

Although the post relates to ads, and my radio experience was with ads, it’s applicable to all forms of writing. For the love of Mike, don’t write if you’ve nothing to write about.

It relates to something Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said and which I’ve paraphrased numerous times. Great writers are not great for what they’ve written but for what they haven’t written. While the rest of us scribble anything, the great writers toss out. They edit. They don’t waste our time (as I seem to be doing now having said what I wanted to say).

Oh … my other point is that this explains why I haven’t posted for a while. I’ve had nothing worth saying. (Yes, it happens!)
