Wired had this item: Video Shills for Literary Stars.

The upside of this is that authors and publishers are using technology and making an effort at being a bit innovative in their marketing. (The industry has always struck me as being somewhat luddite so this is a good sign to me.)

On the other hand, though I’m not very familiar with what they’re doing here (so I may be talking through my hat), it seems they’re using another medium’s model (movies, videos etc.) and that may not be the way to go. For one thing, video is all about images (as opposed to words) and books are about words (as opposed to images).

Not sure what I mean by that though. (It’s still early in the day for me.)

The other thing to note is the idea seems restricted to authors who already have publishers given the costs involved in producing these videos. An author going it alone (self-publishing or in search of an audience in order to find a publisher) is likely to find the financial outlay to get these clips made steep (at least) if not prohibitive.
